Global Sustainability Initiative Sees Continued Growth, with Addition of New Farmed Salmon Producer from Iceland

London, United Kingdom – September 12th, 2014, 11:00 BST

Fjarðalax ehf., a farmed salmon producer from Iceland, has officially joined the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), bringing the current membership count to 18 companies. GSI‘s membership has expanded by over 25 percent since May 2014, showcasing the industry’s commitment and eagerness to improve their environmental and social performance as an increasing priority.

“It is very encouraging to see GSI continue to gain momentum and support,” said Jon Hindar, current GSI Co-Chair and CEO of Cermaq. “As the initiative continues to grow, and more companies and people get involved, the more impactful are our efforts.”

Fjarðalax has environmentally friendly and self-sustaining farming operations located in Iceland’s Westfjords, where the brand Arctic Salmon is farmed at low density in pollution free waters. The company’s farming units and headquarters are in Talknafjordur, and its hatchery is in Thorlakshofn on the south coast.

“In a fairly young industry in Iceland, and with our focus on farming salmon in harmony with nature, we were excited to hear of GSI, and its efforts in uniting the industry in a global focus to improve sustainability,” said Einar Örn Ólafsson, CEO of Fjarðalax. “Seeing the progress that has already been made, Fjarðalax is pleased to become a member and work with the other GSI companies to further their vital work in supporting future growth of the industry internationally.”

As a member of GSI, Fjarðalax will contribute to the initiative‘s efforts to increase industry sustainability by working with the fellow members to improve the management of biosecurity challenges, ensuring sustainable sources of industry feed, and joining the commitment from all member companies to reach the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) standard by 2020.
